GODHRA: An NRI social worker attacked Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday over the handling of the post-Godhra riot situation in 2002.

"How could the government, police and the judiciary look the other way when people were being burnt," Hari P Sharma, who runs Canada-based NGO 'South Asian Network for Secularism and Democracy', alleged after visiting riot-hit places in Panchmahals district.

Charging the state government with "making the state into a laboratary for 'Hindutva' ideology", Sharma claimed it had also failed in providing adequate relief to the riot- affected people of Panchmahals district.

Claiming that he represented 25 NGOs across Europe having similar views on the issue, Sharma told reporters that Modi should be tried under the international laws.

Sharma also criticised L K Advani for his failure to act on the matter as Deputy Prime Minister in the NDA Government.

He said several details about the Godhra incident and the riots had been collected and would be released at conferences in New York, Washington and California on fourth anniversary of the carnage on February 27, 2006.
