South Asians in Labor and Liberation in East Africa

The participation of South Asians in the struggles of labor and toward liberation in East Africa is little known yet significant. Sultan Somjee, who worked in the underground with the world-renowned Kenyan writer and radical activist, Ngugi Wa-Thiongo will retrieve the contribution of South Asians to these struggles. He will also read from his works of ethno-fiction.
Somjee is an ehnographer who got his PhD at McGill’s and lived with indigenous people in East Africa for more than 30 years. He was Head of Ethnography at the National Museum of Kenya and curated the “Asian African Heritage Exhibition.” He introduced Indigenous Arts Education in Kenyan schools and set up museums of peace at grassroots level in conflict zones. He has curated several exhibitions and written several books and articles.
