Solidarity with Bangladesh students

SANSAD statement on Bangladesh student protest

July 6, 2018

South Asian Network for Secularism and Democracy (SANSAD) strongly condemns the repressive measures taken by the Government of Bangladesh against students agitating for road safety following the killing of two students by a speeding bus in Dhaka on July 29.

We utterly deplore the use of violence by the police and non-state actors aided by the police against peaceful demonstrators demanding the basic human right of the right to life on the streets of Bangladesh, where many thousands are killed by traffic every year. SANSAD stands in wholehearted solidarity with the students in Bangladesh in their just demand.

We deplore the violence of the non-state actors unhindered by the police against journalists and photographers, including the  molestation of a female journalist of the Daily Star, that has left several journalists injured.

We demand the immediate release from custody of photographer Shahidul Alam, who was arrested by Dhaka Metropolitan Police for reporting on the situation in Bangladesh in an interview on Al Jazeera yesterday.

We stand in solidarity with all students from Bangladesh in their struggle for justice. We stand in solidarity with all journalists and photographers who work to keep us informed so that we can struggle for democracy and a just world.

Manik Mukherjee, Vice-President of the All India Anti-imperialist Forum issued the following statement

All India Anti-imperialist Forum condemns the Israeli enactment which effectively denies the civil rights of the Palestinians living in Israel.

The All India Anti-imperialist Forum (AIAIF) strongly condemns the enactment of the heinous new law in the Israeli Parliament which declares Israel as the “Nation State of the Jewish people” and asserts that Israel is the homeland of the Jews with Jerusalem as the capital, Hebrew as the official language and announces that the right of national self-determination is “unique to the Jewish people.” Ever since the birth of the State of Israel when millions of native Palestinians were driven out of their homeland and became perpetual refugees, through successive wars of aggression it has annexed a vast area of Palestinian land. It illegally occupied both East and West  Jerusalem  and proclaimed the “unified and complete” Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which was a clear violation of international law. Countless Resolutions were passed in the UN condemning Israel as the violator of International laws. But Israel paid little heed to the Resolutions being supported by USA and other imperialist powers. Sometime back the President of the United States, Donald Trump, defying world opinion, announced the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and shifted the US Embassy to Jerusalem. Israel was emboldened by this display of open US support and has now made this heinous and fascistic enactment. The new law effectively robs the constitutional rights of equality from the native Palestinians living in Israel.  It will establish Jewish supremacy to the detriment of the Non-Jewish people. The Arab legislators in the Israeli Parliament has branded it as racist and legalizing Apertheid. The world opinion has roundly condemned this move and even a section of saner Jewish population have opposed this nefarious move of the rulers. We urge the Indian government to bring pressure on Israel to rescind this law.

The All India Anti-imperialist Forum stands in solidarity with the Palestinian people fighting to realize their just demands   and strongly condemns the aggression of Israel against the people of Palestine. We call upon all the freedom-loving people of the world to rise up in protest against Israel’s heinous acts, abetted by USA in league with other imperialist powers. Israel must withdraw this despicable legislation.

PUCL defends National Secretary, Sudha Bhardwaj

People’s Union for Civil Liberties – PUCL

Response of Advocate Sudha Bharadwaj, National Secretary, PUCL, to the vicious and malicious attack launched on her by Republic TV and Arnab Goswami today.

PUBLIC STATEMENT BY ADVOCATE SUDHA BHARADWAJ,
Visiting Professor, National Law University Delhi and National Secretary, Peoples’ Union for Civil Liberties

I have been informed that Republic TV aired a programme on 4 July 2018, presented by anchor and MD Arnab Goswami as “Super Exclusive Breaking News”. The programme, which is being repeatedly shown, contains a long list of ridiculous, scurrilous, false and completely unsubstantiated allegations against me. Goswami has claimed that I have written a letter (identifying myself as “Comrade Advocate Sudha Bharadwaj”) to a Maoist – one “Comrade Prakash” – stating that a “Kashmir like situation” has to be created. I am also accused of having received money from Maoists. I am also said to have confirmed that various advocates, some of whom I know as excellent human rights lawyers and others whom I do not know at all, had some sort of Maoist link.
I firmly and categorically deny that the letter referred to by Goswami – if at all such a document exists – has ever been written by me. I firmly refute all the allegations that the Republic TV has made against me, defaming me, causing me professional and personal injury. In its programme, the Republic TV has not revealed the source of such a letter. I find it curious that a document purporting to contain evidence of such serious crimes should first surface in the studio of Arnab Goswami. I have been a dedicated trade unionist since the past 30 years, working in the organisation of the late legendary Shankar Guha Niyogi, Chhattisgarh Mukti Morcha, in the working class shanties of Dalli Rajhara and Bhilai, and hundreds of workers are witness to the fact. As a part of my work as a trade unionist I became a lawyer in the year 2000 since when I have fought scores of cases of workers, farmers, adivasis and poor people in the fields of labour, land acquisition, forest rights and environmental rights. Since the year 2007 I am practising in the High Court of Chhattisgarh at Bilaspur and was nominated by the High Court to be a member of the Chhattisgarh State Legal Services Authority. In the last year I have been teaching at the National Law University Delhi in the capacity of a Visiting Professor, where I offered a seminar course on tribal rights and land acquisition; and a part of the regular course on law and poverty. As a part of the programme of the Delhi Judicial Academy, I addressed the presiding officers of labour courts from Sri Lanka.
My pro-people positions and work as a human rights lawyer are a matter of public record. I am perfectly aware that they stand in direct opposition to the views so loudly and frequently expressed by Arnab Goswami and Republic TV. In my opinion the present malicious, motivated and fabricated attack on me is because I recently addressed a press conference in Delhi to condemn the arrest on 6 June of Advocate Surendra Gadling. The Indian Association of People’s Lawyers (IAPL), an organisation of lawyers has also strongly taken up the issue of other lawyers such as Advocate Chandrashekhar of Bhim Army and Advocate Vachinathan arrested after the Sterlite firing. It is clear that in targeting such lawyers, the state is trying to silence those who stand for the democratic rights of citizens. The state strategy is to create a chilling effect and deny equitable access to the legal system. Also very recently the IAPL had organised a fact finding into the difficulties faced by lawyers in Kashmir.
As a human rights lawyer I have appeared in cases of habeas corpus and fake encounters of adivasis in the High Court of Chhattisgarh and also made representations to the National Human Rights Commission in the defence of many human rights defenders. Recently the NHRC had sought my assistance in investigating a case in Village Kondasawali ( Sukma, Chhattisgarh). In all these cases I have acted with the professional integrity and courage expected of a human rights lawyer. This indeed appears to be “my crime” which has earned me the super exclusive attentions of Arnab Goswami.
I have asked my lawyer to send a legal notice to Arnab Goswami and Republic TV for their false, malicious and defamatory allegations against me.

Witch-hunt against trade unionists and human rights defenders

Stop the Witch-hunting of Trade Unionists and Human Rights Defenders

The New Trade Union Initiative condemns the baseless allegations, that are fabricated and defamatory, made against Comrade Sudha Bharadwaj leader of the Pragatisheel Cement Shramik Sangh and Jan Aadharit Engineering Mazdoor Union in Chhattisgarh of having ‘Maoist’ links, receiving funds from ‘Maoists’ and creating a ‘Kashmir like situation’ by Republic TV Managing Director and anchor, Arnab Goswami.

A large section of the media, which should above all be the defender of democracy, has placed itself at the disposal of rightwing political forces, the ruling BJP government and agencies of state to serve an agenda that goes against the interest of the many and serves the interest of the few.
The references to Sudha are part of an ongoing campaign both in government and through regressive forces in civil society to create an atmosphere of fear amongst those speaking up and standing against the attack on democracy, justice and equality.

Sudha, inspired by Sankar Guha Niyogi, joined the trade union movement three decades ago in the difficult terrain of Dalli Rajhara and Bhilai. She has also been an active human rights defender who recently spoke against the arrest of human rights activist and General Secretary of Indian Association of Peoples’ Lawyers, Surendra Gadling, for his alleged link with the Bhima Koregaon violence in Nagpur. Gadling has been unremittingly fighting cases against human rights violations and false UAPA cases imposed upon Dalits and Adivasis while providing legal aid to Delhi University professor G.N. Saibaba and dalit rights activist Sudhir Dhawale. Sudha also has been vocal against the arrest of Damodar Turi from Ranchi allegedly as an activist connected to the unlawfully banned trade union Mazdoor Sangathan Samity (MSS). Comrade Sudha has also challenged the ban of MSS is trade union organisation, registered under the provisions of the Trade Union Act 1926 since 1989 unionising contract workers and other workers in the informal sector who are amongst the most exploited section of the country’s working people. The ban on MSS is not just in violation of the Trade Unions Act but also an attack on the fundamental rights of MSS’ members in so far as the Government of Jharkhand’s action denies them their right to freedom of association as provided under Article 19(1) c of the Indian Constitution.

The NTUI joins with all progressive forces in fighting this attack as it stands in solidarity with Comrade Sudha Bharadwaj and the members of the Pragatisheel Cement Shramik Sangh and Jan Aadharit Engineering Mazdoor Union who continue to face the gravest attack on their rights and workers and citizens. Their fight is our fight and a fight we must win.
